Compare Photo Printer Prices, Features and Print Quality Before You Buy

!: Compare Photo Printer Prices, Features and Print Quality Before You Buy

I've tested the top three color ink-jet photo printers and came up with some money saving tips for you to consider. It is always a good idea to shop around and read a few printer reviews before buying big ticket electronics, especially photo printers because there are so many different models to chose from. In order to make a solid buying decision, you need to compare photo printer features, prices and print quality.

The best way to compare photo printer quality is to evaluate brands selling for the exact same price. We put the Canon PIXMA iP5000, the HP 8150, and the Epson Stylus Photo R320 to the test and found that despite the manufacturer's claims that their printer produced the "best photo prints" over any model in its price range, there was a distinct leader in print quality among the top three best photo printers.

To accurately compare photo printer printing quality it is imperative that you use the photo paper and ink recommended by the manufacturer. Each photo printer is specifically designed to produce the highest quality prints using their manufacturers photo paper and printer ink. So to get the best photo print results, we used the recommended paper and ink for all of our comparison testing.

Before we take a look at our photo test results, let's compare photo printer features that seem to stand out among our top three best printers. The Canon PIXMA iP5000, is the smallest of the three models and is very compact. It prints ink jet droplets as small as 1 picoliter, which is half the size of last year's model. The smaller the picoliter, the sharper crisper and clearer the final photograph will be.

The Canon PIXMA photo printer has duplex printing capabilities which allow you to print on both sides of the paper which is a very convenient feature for multi page printing. All you have to do is check the appropriate box on the print screen and the printer does all the work for you. The PIXMA iP5000 will also sequentially print on both sides of the paper which makes it easy to print professional looking photo album pages right from your own home.

The HP Printer and the Epson Stylus Photo printer both allow you to edit and print you images without using the computer. All you have to do is plug in the memory card from your digital camera into the slots on the printer and use their controls to make minor adjustments to your images before printing. You can crop, remove red-eye, adjust brightness and select formatting all from the color LCD display on the printer. This is an extremely handy feature to take note of, especially for travelers.

Not only are photo printers with memory cards convenient for travelers, but if you're in a rush and just want to make a quick print, it's a great time saver. However, if you need to make color corrections or precise image adjustments, you should use your computer's photo editing software for best results.

One of the coolest features that I have found during my quest to compare photo printer deals is the ability of the Epson Stylus Photo R320 to print directly onto specially coated CDs and DVDs. Yes, you can print directly onto a CD; just slide the disk into the specially designed slot on the Epson printer, and presto! You have a digital image of any kind printed directly onto your own custom CD or DVD.

Microboards Print Factory Pro DVD, CD Printer Review - (Microboards PF-Pro Printer)

!: Microboards Print Factory Pro DVD, CD Printer Review - (Microboards PF-Pro Printer)

The Microboards Print Factory Pro inkjet CD / DVD printer is fully automated with a 100-disc capacity, large individual CMYK ink cartridges, and PC / MAC compatibility.

This review of the Microboards PF-Pro inkjet printer is based on seven different criteria, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars (5 being the highest rating possible). We have run about 60,000 CDs and DVDs through 10 different Microboards Printfactory Pro printers over the past 45 days. And here are the results...

Price - MSRP of 95, and a street price around 95. The Microboards PrintFactory Pro printer is more expensive compared with other inkjet printers like the Microboards PF-3 and GX Auto Printers, and the Primera Bravo Pro, Bravo II and SE models. 3 Stars.

Speed - There are multiple print resolution options with the Print Factory Pro. For our testing and production runs we used either the "text and graphics best" or "photo normal" options. The photo normal mode slower and lays down more ink, for a high-resolution print, than the text and graphics mode. The design of the disc artwork also influences the number of CDs / DVDs that can be printed per hour. We found that you get about 75 full coverage discs/hour printing using photo normal. With 30% print coverage using the text and graphics best mode you will get about 115 discs/hour. 4.5 Stars.

Bin Capacity - The Microboards PF-Pro has a bin capacity of 100 discs, either CD-r or DVD-r. This stacks up well against most other sub 00 automated inkjet printers. A larger input capacity would be nice with the addition of the larger C, M, Y, and K ink cartridges. 3.5 Stars.

Cost per Print - With inkjet printers the cost per print will fluctuate based on color combinations, print coverage, and the print resolution and speed selected in the Printfactory Pro print driver. We found that full coverage multiple color discs run about Body.12/disc. Discs with a 30% print coverage consisting of a few colors and black text cost about Body.05/disc in ink. 5 Stars.

Print Quality - Color graphics are vibrant, and the black text printing is pretty sharp. Models like the Microboards PF-3 are a bit crisper with text printing. The PF-Pro printer also does a good job with large blocks of solid colors. 4 Stars.

Print Durability - Inkjet printers use water-based ink, so when the CD or DVD comes in contact with moisture, the print on the disc will smear and smudge. This is the case minutes, hours, days, and years after the disc is printed (unless you print on Taiyo Yuden waterproof discs). That being said, the Microboards Print Factory Pro is as durable as any other inkjet CD printer on the market. 2 Stars.

Easy of Use - The PF-Pro has a single USB 2.0 connection to a PC or MAC. It comes with a popular and easy to use CD / DVD graphic software called SureThing. You can import standard graphic images like .jpeg, .bmp, .png and .gif. The print driver controls the robotic disc loading mechanism, so there is no complicated software to learn. You can also print directly from Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop with some adjustments to the margins within the printer driver. In addition, we were able to hook up 4 of the Microboards PF-Pro printers to a single PC with a USB 2.0 hub. 4.5 Stars.

Maintenance - As with most inkjet CD / DVD printers, the Print Factory Pro needs to have internal sensors and components cleaned about every 5000 discs due to ink over spray. In addition, there are two printheads (1 for Black/Yellow and 1 for the Cyan/Magenta) that need replacing every 50,000 discs or so. We have not had the need to replace any printheads as of this review. 3.5 Stars.

Technical Support - Microboards has above average phone technical support for the CD / DVD equipment industry. After warranty repairs can be expensive, as they are with other manufactures in this niche. 4 Stars.

Conclusion - Microboards PF-Pro (part# PFP-1000) is out top pick for automated inkjet CD printers for standard 120mm CD-r, DVD-r, and Blu-Ray media. Strengths are cost per print, speed, and the ability to hook up multiple printers on a single PC.
